Expectations for Student Effort 

For each hour of lecture equivalent, students should expect to have a minimum of two hours of work outside of class.

 

Grading

To earn a satisfactory (S) grade, students must do three things:
1. Earn 27 points (see “How to Earn Points” section)
2. Complete small-group projects
3. Not exceed allowable absences (see “Attendance” section)

How to earn points:
1. Attend class. Students earn 1 point for attending class and completing the end-of-class activity (muddiest point and minute paper, via Socrative or turned in notecard). Students can earn a maximum of 15 points by attending class.
2. Complete summaries of certain classes for 1 point. For the class period introducing a project or with a guest speaker (see schedule), write a 1-page single-spaced paper summarizing the class, any pertinent thoughts or personal research a student has done on the topic. The key is students should demonstrate they are actively engaging with the class. This should be formatted as detailed in “general_homework_requirements.pdf”. If a student was absent from a particular class (with an excused absence), they can write a 2-page summary to earn 2 points for that class period (earning back the attendance point). Students can earn a maximum of 8 points + number of excused absences by completing summaries.
    a. Summaries must be turned in by whichever due date comes first to earn a point:
        i. within 3 weeks of the class it summarizes
        ii. by 5 p.m. on the day before final grades are due
    b. Summaries not following summary guidelines will not be graded. Students will be informed by Canvas message or email that their work was deemed to have not followed               summary guidelines.
3. Small-group projects. Students will be assigned to complete three small-group Biomedical Engineering projects. See BME102_project_description_expectations.pdf” for details. While you are expected to participate with your group on all aspects of the projects, your participation will be measured by three metrics: 
o Participate in the project check-in with the instructor, 1 point.
o Have your group receive a score of at least 5/6 on the project rubric for your final report (see rubric_bme102_project.pdf”).
o You can earn a maximum of 3 points (1 for midterm check-in, 2 for report) for each project.
4. Meet with the instructor during office hours. Students meeting with the professor during office hours (or by scheduling an appointment to meet) can earn 1 point per meeting. Students must meet with the professor for at least 15 minutes to earn a point. You can earn a maximum of 3 points from meeting with the professor.
5. Complete course evaluations. Complete the mid-semester and end-of-semester course evaluations. You can earn a maximum of 2 points from completing course evaluation.


Attendance and Make-Up Policy 

Attendance is expected for every class. There will be a poll/quiz in each class which will be used to collect attendance. These responses will be collected through web-based polls (Socrative, for those with internet-enabled devices) or from notecards with student responses handed into the instructor at the end of each class. Students are allowed 3 excused absences (where students contact the instructor BEFORE the absence) and 1 unexcused absence (were student is absent but DOES NOT contact the instructor beforehand). Absences beyond the 3 allowed excused and 1 unexcused absence will result in an “F”.
